Iitti has a long history as a parish, founded in 1539. Originally, the parish comprised almost the whole area of the nearby town of Kouvola as well as parts of the municipality of Mäntyharju. The division of population to so-called "Water People" in the north and "Land People" in the south is based on ecclesiastical heritage. The Kymijoki River flows for 60 km through the municipality and expands into large lake districts. The Mankala rapids have nowadays been harnessed for production of energy. The lake district north of Salpausselkä Ridge, and the Kymijoki River, offer excellent conditions for fishing and nature tourism, as well as for the ever increasing adventure tourism. The current population of Iitti is 7100. There are ca. 2700 summerhouses in the area and the number is growing constantly. Summer and part-time residents also take an active part in many functions of the community.

The former municipal centre, Iitti Church Village, which lies on a ridge surrounded by three lakes, bears the title of the most beautiful village in Finland. The over 300-year-old wooden church is a popular venue for marriages. It also provides the main stage for the Iitti Chamber Music Festival in June. Midnight concert on the Hiidenvuori Hill in the middle of Lake Pyhäjärvi is one of the highlights of the Music Festival.

Exhibitions in the Community Centre in the Church Village, the Colour Centre and Museum and Iitti Golf Centre, together with the Radansuu Manor Hotel, complete the offer of this cultural milieu of Kymenlaakso Region. The area is annually visited by ca. 60 000 people. For nature lovers, there are new regional, marked routes for cycling, canoeing, hiking and skiing. Vuolenkoski village in the north is known for its flea markets in the harbour as well as for its plan to develop the village into a modern neighbourhood and service centre.

Iitti is a lively rural community and a home to diverse businesses. Production of indoor climate solutions and research centre of Halton Oy, vehicle factory of Kiitokori Oy, strong engineering industry, plastic and electrical industry, business incubator for health technology as well as versatile commercial services are concentrated in Kausala, the urban centre of Iitti.

The 130-year-old tradition of markets and fairs characterizes the commercial life of Kausala. Markets are held every first Tuesday in the month and on summer weekends on the Market Square. In summertime, various events bring even more life to the Market Square on Wednesday evenings. Visitors should not miss Benjami Farmers' Market, which boasts the best meat market in the country and products from over 150 suppliers.

Welcome to Iitti!
